Behold a Multi-Touchscreen Tablet with Removable Hard Drives, a Smartphone, and a Tablet

While this post began as a simple presentation of the industrial design concept we're about to take a look at, it transformed ever so slightly into a work that explores what the possibilities could be for touchscreen conglomerations such as this. The concept at hand is called the Bento LaptopTablet Hybrid and it’s designed and rendered by Rene Woo-Ram Lee. This concept is sent to us by our good friends at Yanko Design, a site dedicated to such conceptual works. This design features a laptop with a 15? OLED touchscreen, a 1TB SSD drive, a solar-powered lithium-ion battery, an 11? tablet computer and a 4? phone, all of these bits able to sit in shallow depressions in the base of the laptop and connect as one device. via Behold a Multi-Touchscreen Tablet with Removable Hard Drives, a Smartphone, and a Tablet.

Microsoft Spends $7.5M on 666K Nortel IPv4 Addresses

 

As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, Nortel Networks has sold more than half a million IPv4 addresses to Microsoft for $7.5 million.

The sale includes 666,624 IPv4 addresses that Nortel obtained in the 1990s. Of that, 470,016 addresses are available for immediate use, while 196,608 will be ready by year's end.

Nortel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2009, and started exploring the sale of its businesses and assets in June 2009. Realizing that IPv4 addresses might be an attractive prospect to some companies, Nortel retained an advisor, Addrex, which reached out to 80 potential buyers in December 2010.

As Nortel pointed out in its filing, "IPv4 addresses will eventually be supplanted by IPv6 addresses, of which there is a virtually unlimited supply, but this is expected to take several years. Because of the limited supply of IPv4 addresses, there is currently an opportunity to realize value from marketing the Internet Numbers, which opportunity will diminish over time as IPv6 addresses are more widely adopted.

"In February, the Number Resource Organization NRO, an industry group made up of five regional Internet provider registries, said it had handed out the last of the 4.3 billion available addresses on the IPv4 system.

Of the 80 parties contacted by Addrex and Nortel, 14 signed non-disclosure agreements to examine more in-depth information about the IPv4 addresses. By January 2011, Nortel received four bids to acquire all the available addresses and three bids for a partial sale. Microsoft was the winner with a $7.5 million bid.

Will a $200 ASUS Eee PC finally ship with Google's help?

As hard as it tried, ASUS never could get its Eee PC prices down to $200 MSRP as promised way back in 2007 -- a time when Intel-based netbooks still shipped with Linux distros and "tablet PCs" ran a Microsoft OS. Fast forward to today and netbooks are being kicked to the curb for ARM-based tablets running smartphone operating systems. To compete, ASUS, a company that's become synonymous with netbooks, is planning to ship an unsubsidized $200 to $250 netbook running Android 3.0 or Chrome OS in June. According to DigiTimes sources, anyway, who tend to be pretty accurate with regard to Taiwanese companies. If true then expect to see it announced at Computex which kicks off in Taiwan on May 31st.

Samsung’s latest 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab teaser hints impressive slimness

Samsung hasn't been entirely shy about its forthcoming 8.9-inch tablet, though Mr. Blurrycam seems to be having some trouble getting on a plane in Seoul. Fortunately for us, today the Korean giant decided to give us mere mortals a sneak peek at said device, and it sure looks promising -- as you can see above, the bulge seems to imply that the tablet's general thickness almost matches the headphone jack's height. If true, this would put Samsung's 8.9-incher head to head with Apple's 8.8mm thick iPad 2 in a fitness contest. Bring on March 22nd!

ViewSonic’s dual-booting Android / Windows 7 ViewPad 10 tablet now shipping

It sure took 'em long enough, but ViewSonic's dual-booting ViewPad 10 has finally, really, actually made it to America. A few days after the iPad 2 most likely sucked any remaining wind out of its sails, mind you, but it's quite possible that the target market for an Android 1.6 + Windows 7 tablet couldn't care less about a similar one from Apple. If you'll recall, this one's rocking a 10.1-inch touchpanel (1024 x 600), 1.66GHz Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a version of Android we forgot about in 1994. You'll also find a microSD slot and a copy of Windows Home 7 Premium (with a 16GB SSD) or Windows 7 Professional (with a 32GB SSD). Still interested? Just wait until we tell you all about the $599 and $679 price tags, respectively.

P.S. - Yeah, that's OS X shown running on the ViewPad 10 above. No, it won't actually do that in real life.

Android’s everywhere! Xtreamer PVR to serve up a heaping helping of Froyo in your home theater

We got to check out Xtreamer's Prodigy media player and go hands-on with its Ultra HTPC at CeBIT last week, but it turns out that the company has another nifty device set to debut this year. After taking a peek at its 2011 product catalog, we discovered that the Xtreamer PVR is "comming soon" with a similarly sexy exterior and much of the same specs as the Prodigy, but packing a Sigma Designs SMP8656 chip for high-end 3D graphics, optional dual tuners, and Android 2.2. We sincerely hope that Xtreamer's prowess with Froyo far exceeds its aptitude for spelling -- we kid because we care.
