Facebook likes Karma app, buys the whole darn thing

Facebook likes Karma app, buys the whole darn thingWhat does one do after generating billions from an initial public stock offering? Go shopping, of course. After falling short of expectations following its somewhat helter-skelter IPO debut, Facebook simply shook off the whole thing and acquired itself some good Karma. No, we're not talking about that Karma. Instead, Facebook purchased the startup responsible for the Karma social gifting app. The move was apparently made to bolster Facebook's mobile chops -- an area the company considers ripe for opportunity. Just recently, Facebook also acquired mobile stalwart Instagram and the Lightbox team, for example. As for its newest purchase, Karma will be allowed to "continue to operate in full force" despite its recent status change, according to a blog post by co-founders Lee Linden and Ben Lewis. Details weren't disclosed about how much the deal was worth but judging from celebratory nature of their post, it doesn't look like Linden and Lewis will "Unlike" the agreement any time soon.

Facebook IPO is official: $38 per share, on sale tomorrow under ticker symbol 'FB'

We largely steer clear of companies going public here at Engadget, but Facebook and its zillions of users warrants an atypical tip of the hat. The outfit has announced that starting tomorrow, 421,233,615 shares of its common stock will be up for grabs at a price to the public of $38 per share. It'll trade on the NASDAQ under the symbol "FB," with the outfit offering 180,000,000 shares of Class A common stock and selling stockholders offering 241,233,615 shares of Class A common stock. Closing of the offering is expected to occur on May 22nd, subject to "customary closing conditions." And with that, we'd like to congratulate a plethora of new billionaires on... well, being billionaires. Don't work too hard, guys and girls.

Celebratory video is after the break.

Facebook Pages Manager for iOS sees soft launch, stats junkies rejoice

Image

If you're pining for another way to keep tabs on your Facebook pages while out and about, you're in luck -- that is, if you live in Australia, New Zealand or Ireland. Stealthily launched yesterday for iOS, Facebook's Page Manager app lets administrators keep an eye on page-specific notifications and Page Insight (read: number of likes, shares, views, et cetera) in addition to the normal management fare already available in Facebook's official app. For those in other territories dreaming of using the app, hope is not lost. As a late addition to Ireland's iTunes' Store after its initial appearance for Aussies, it looks like the app is following protocol by holding out on most of the world with its initial launch. As for page owners wielding other operating systems, there's no word on when your app's coming down the chute.

4.5 Trillion Dollars

Free Money Collection in Cash

4,500,000,000,000 is a HUGE number! To put it in perspective let's look at in a few different ways: 4,500,000,000,000 is the number of cigarette butts littered each year 4,500,000,000,000 is the amount of natural gas discover recently in Argentina 4,500,000,000,000 is the amount of euros the EU has approved for aid to the banks 4,500,000,000,000 is less than half of the total outstanding debt held by the public 4,500,000,000,000 is the total wealth of the Forbes list of billionaires 4.5 trillion dollars belong to 1,210 people! The Forbes list broke records this year for the number of billionaires and the total worth. Moscow has more billionaires than any other city, the BMOC gained 20.5 billion dollars this past year, Facebook has spawned 6 billionaires and a Russian internet investor is the youngest billionaire (by 8 days over Zuckerberg) at 26 years old! Just think what you or I could do with just a small fraction of the wealth these 1,210 people have! If they were to give away one million dollars to people until it was all gone, there would be 4.5 million new millionaires in the world! Would those 4.5 million people be able to make the same changes in the world as the 1.210 could? I doubt it.....human nature would cause us to spend that money on things for us and/or our families not on the things that would benefit millions more people. Take Bill Gates fro an example.....Bill would be the number one on the list had he not given away $30 billion dollars to his non-profit foundation. Others on this list have given untold amounts of money to help people across the world. Still, just think how much new computer stuff you or I could get with just a small fraction of that money!!

Chatty Cathy

Digsby Mascot

Ok.......I know that phrase probably out dates alot of you, but it is something most of you know alot about.....IM's. How many IM accounts do you have? I have at least 4......plus I have one I can't remember the login for and have no hope of getting it back :-( Now everyone knows what a pain it is to have several Instant Messaging programs running at the same time........they eat memory as if you had 32 GB of the stuff, and the you have 2, 3, 5, maybe even 7 extra icons in your systray for all of them.

Wouldn't it be nice to have just ONE program to use to log into all of your "chatty cathy" programs? Some of you probably use Trillian to solve the issue and thee is nothing wrong with that, but admit it, Trillian has gotten to be bloatware too! I started looking about a year ago for one program to handle all of my IM accounts. I tried Miranda, Pidgin, PowWow and others before finally deciding on digsby!
